This week, we have a mix that comes from overseas by way of Japan. Daisuke Tanabe, the man behind the mix, is a Japanese veteran producer who has a background that includes release’s on Project Mooncircle, Brownswood, and Ninja Tune, along with participating in the Red Bull Music Academy in 2010. While his rap sheet speaks enough about his talent itself, the music that he makes speaks louder. He is inspired by folk, jazz, and the more heady side of electronic hip hop. These influences are what make his music so unique, but the prolific technical aspects coupled with his ability to create depth within his songs are what make listening to him such a special experience. In this mix, he takes us on a trip through the different music, past and present, that inspires him. We recommend entrenching yourself in what may be the most animated mix we’ve received to date. Also, make sure to grab his latest release, a collaborative project with Kidkanevil titled Kidsuke, out now on Project Mooncircle.

We’re excited to announce the newest edition to The Melt family, Queen Leaf. After contributing to our monthly mix series and providing us with his stunning track “Paraquiesce”on The Melt Compilation Vol . 1, Queen Leaf is one who’s sound we’ve sincerely enjoyed, and wanted to hear more of since first listen. “Planted” is Queen Leaf’s debut EP, and it showcases everything we love about his sound. With each track clocking in at just over 6 minutes, our favorite moments from Queen Leaf come from waiting. He create’s texture filled, yet spacious atmospheres, where he layers concise percussion and mantra-like repetitions of vocal samples that culminate into a sonically unique and enrapturing listen. Queen Leaf successfully diversifies a sound which clearly inspires him, and churns it into something of his own.

After releasing their debut compilation last year, The Cadence Sampler, we’ve been wanting to hear more from The Cadence Collective. M∞n, their co-founder, provides us with a mix that serves as a testament to their fresh yet familiar approach to making music. You’ll hear your favorite ignorant hood acapellas blended with the type of innovative sounds you’ve come to expect from the contemporary beat scene. While the mix could easily be viewed as something his live set may be like, there are moments offered here for the listener to delve deeper into, a bit of something for everybody. The balance of upbeat rhythms and more ambient melodies make for a highly listenable 30 minutes of music. Including like minded producers such as RAJA, M∞n pays tribute to similar musicians who are honing in on a new way to present a quickly evolving hip-hop aesthetic. One we can’t get enough of.

So far, 2013 has given us so much good music that it’s been hard to keep up with. While we try and stay up to date as possible, and post about artists as soon as they release new music, sometimes it doesn’t happen that way. With all of the new sounds stirring about in the melting pot of a scene we find ourselves in, it’s inevitable, and quite common, that some gems of releases will go unnoticed. Our Recap section allows us to talk about some releases that have slipped by us or that we’ve been listening to but may not have had time to post about.

SEENMR – Chinatown Tape

It’s really refreshing when someone utilizes simplicity. With Chinatown Tape, Seenmr does just this, blending a broad ranges of samples with home recorded drum sounds and lush textures. Seenmr conjured up Chinatown tape in Chinatown SF, with a friends record collection, an SP 303, MPC1000, and other “ancient techniques.” While the ancient techniques part of this statement is left for you to interpret, with track names such as “Brahman Bounce” and “Sun Temple”, it’s apparent that he takes influence from Hindu ideologies. This is reflected by the alluring qualities of each sample chosen, which draw you in, in a meditative manner.

Evenings – Yore

Evenings is one of my favorite producers of the moment. Since first listening to his EP titled “North Dorm”, and his full length “Lately”, I was hooked. His unique blend of acoustic guitar, warm-fuzzy keys and crisp sounding micro percussion work in a soothing sonic harmony. This, coupled with the substance and emotion that live in his music is what makes listening to him so enamoring. “Yore”, which was released via LA imprint Friends of Friends, is a collection of re-mastered song’s from his self-released LP “Lately”. There are also a couple of tracks included from the EP mentioned above, “North Dorm”, and one taken from his “Unreleased Collection”. To add to the excitement, there are even two remixes on the release, one from Munno (who you may remember from The Melt Compilation Vol. 1), and another from Shigeto. There is no doubt that Evenings has something special going on with his music. Do yourself a favor, and buy this.

Lord RAJA – Rubies EP

For all of those who know, Raja has been an artist we’ve been pulling for since his first releases on Astro Nautico. We’re glad to see that his dedication and love for his craft are now being rewarded. “Rubies” EP is RAJA’s first release through Ghostly International, whom he announced signing with several weeks ago. While RAJA’s sound rarely adheres to one strict aesthetic, this EP seems to be a sort of testament to him finding his sound, and getting comfortable with it. Grab “Rubies” for free from Ghostly’s website.

Soosh – Colour is Breathe

I was late to the party on this one, but better late than never, right? Soosh has been another artist whom up until February 28th, had yet to release a full length. “Colour is Breathe” saw a release on Error Broadcast, arguably one of the most consistant and under-rated experimental electronic music label’s around. The Scotland based producer crafts a colorful and dreamy breed of music. Hazy analogue synths glide from speaker to speaker and ride on top of slow swung hip hop rhythms comprised of carefully placed organic percussion. Today, a remixed version of the album is also set to be released. The set feature’s a stacked lineup of takes from Dam Mantle, Evenings, Synkro, Devonwho, and a handful of other talented producers. Stream and/or buy the remixes and the original version of “Colour is Breathe” below.

This month, LA mix wizard Paul Preston a.k.a. PBDY has graced us with our 10th mix series. The Brainfeeder affiliate and The Underachiever’s DJ is a mixer by trade. Having focused more time on his mixes than on personal productions, PBDY has been honing in on making eclectic mixes that showcase his diverse musical palette. The 37 minutes of music he’s provided us with bounce’s between genres with ease. While he’s included a hefty amount of the newer, experimental side of hip hop, such as his Brainfeeder peers Jeremiah Jae and Lapalux, the mix is far from attached to one sub genre. One thing is made clear though, and that is PBDYs love for hip hop and all that it’s inspired.

Since our beginning, we’ve been consistently crossing paths with talented artists one way or another. Whether it was from them playing one of our shows, or us finding them on the web, we’ve found something we love about everyone on here. The Melt Compilation Vol. 1 is a collection of songs from these artists alongside all five of our residents who include Gossamer, Moiety, Snorlax, FuzZ, Kloud, and Djemba Djemba. The styles incorporated within the compilation span one too many sub-genres too mention. The release itself is a result of the growing community of talent that we find ourselves in each day. We’re grateful to be a part of such a progressive movement of artists who are paving new paths and we look forward to being here to watch the growth continue. Download/stream the entire compilation below for free!

Providing us with our 9th edition of The Melt Mix Series is Matthew Mauldin aka Wheez-ie. With releases on Well Rounded, Embassy Recordings, Frite Nite, and Freshmore, Wheez-ie has been building up a solid resume over the past couple of years. His style is one that delves into the footwork sound, but their is a clear distinction between its originators and his own. He makes this evident throughout the mix, pairing his own tracks next to RASHAD and other game changers. Overall, this mix sets the image of a packed warehouse party in Chicago where subs are shaking paint chips off the walls.
